National Governance Corps (NGC) adopted by ITI Schools, Bangalore

January 25, 2010 : National Governance Corps (NGC), an initiative taken by the SIV-G (Self Imposed Vigilance for Good Governance) has been adopted by the Schools run by the Indian Telephone Industries (ITI) Ltd., Bangalore.  NGC was first launched in December 2008 in DAV Girls Senior Secondary School, Gopalapuram, Chennai.  Shri N. Vittal, former Central Vigilance Commissioner (CVC) administered the Pledge to the first NGC.  Shri P. Shankar, former Central Vigilance Commissioner (CVC) released the NGC Handbook on 10th December 2008.  The details about the NGC and its progress are available at www.siv-g.org

The Founder of SIV-G and NGC, Shri G. Suresh, who is presently working as Manager(Vigilance) in BEML Ltd., Bangalore is also a Member of the Vigilance Study Circle, Bangalore (VSC-B).  Sometime in January 2009, he made a presentation to the VSC-B Members on the NGC launch.

Subsequently, the progress of NGC caught the attention of the press and articles were published across the country. The Chief Vigilance Officer, BEML Smt. Kalyani Gopal, IRAS who is the Vice-Chairperson of VSC-B showed keen interest to launch NGC in the BEML Schools.  On persuasion, the BEML Management decided to adopt NGC in one of their schools in KGF as a pilot project under CSR.

Realising the far reaching potential of the NGC, the (VSC-B) appealed to its members to adopt the NGC in the Schools run by their respective Public Sector organizations.

The Chairman, VSC-B Shri M.K. Das, IPS and the members of VSC-B from ITI Limited, Bangalore particularly, Shri Venkatesh, Chief Manager (Vigilance), ITI Ltd., responded positively and quickly and arranged meetings with the S/Shri M. Arun Kumar, DGM(R-CA), ITI Ltd & Chairman of the Education Committee, K. Alphonse Kurien, DGM(HR & Vig), Devoor D Y, CM(HR-EP&S), ITI Ltd and Secretary of the Education Committee, Ramesh, Parthasarathy (both members of the Education Committee, ITI Ltd) and the Principals of the two Schools run by ITI Ltd.

Impressed by the initiative, its value and purpose, the Education Committee, ITI Ltd., decided to adopt NGC in the two Schools (CBSE and State Board- Vidya Mandir) involving students of 8th and 9th Standard. Accordingly, the Education Committee organized a meeting and asked Shri G. Suresh, Founder, SIV-G to address the students on 25th January 2010 in the Auditorium of Vidya Mandir School, KR Puram, Bangalore.  There was a gathering of about 250 students of Class 8th and 9th from both the Schools of ITI.  The entire Education Committee, the Principals and teachers of both the schools and also vigilance representative of ITI (Shri M.G. Ramachandran) were present during the address by Shri G. Suresh.  This is a solid proof in itself for the interest and seriousness the authorities had shown while adopting the NGC in their Schools.

The address was well received and as many as 250 students (almost the entire gathering) readily became part of the NGC movement.  Seeing their enthusiasm, the NGC Groups were also formed on the spot.  It was further decided to organize a formal function in which the NGC Pledge would be administered to the students. The NGC Handbook would also be handed over to them at that time.

With this adoption of NGC by the ITI Schools in Bangalore, NGC has made its entry in to yet another major city of India followed by Chennai.  As per the scheme of NGC, there will be an exchange of experience of NGCs in different cities and schools.  Plans are being worked out to make this happen.

Thanks to the initiative of the VSC-B and the right approach of the Education Committee of ITI Ltd., the NGC has taken yet another leaps forward in Bangalore.

Dear Members and Well Wishers of SIV-G,

As you are aware, SIV-G has launched a National Governance Corps (NGC) in Schools on the lines of NCC and NSS.  The NGC is progressing steadily and getting recognised as a movement.  To progress further and to achieve its Mission, SIV-G has resoved on this occasion that:-

(I) It will thrive hard to launch NGC in as many schools/college as possible in this Year 2010, with a minimum target of 100.

(II) To create an active experience sharing SIV-G Forum to share the experience of NGC.  Thanks to Sowmya, a SIV-G Forum has already been created in Facebook and with more Members getting added to this Forum, the purpose will be achieved.

As such, SIV-G appeals to all its Members and Well Wishers to do their best to make it possible for SIV-G to realise the above two New Year Resolutions.

SIV-G and the Building Community Program Cycle

SIV-G and the Building Community Program Cycle
By Wesley Teter, M.A. in Community and Youth Development

Self-Imposed Vigilance for Good Governance (SIV-G) based in Chennai, India is a remarkable example of community building based on youth-adult partnerships. Further, it is asset-based and incorporates what have become known as the “Five Cs” of positive youth development: Competence, Confidence, Connection, Character, and Caring (see Richard Lerner, Tufts University).

Questions: Creating positive and sustainable change is a well-known challenge to community builders like SIV-G. However, by mapping individual and collective assets and creating a shared vision and action plan, it is possible to achieve long-term development. Time for a check-up: 1) Which of the 5 areas below are most important to your SIV-G group today?; 2) How is the group adapting to change to promote sustainability?; 3) Do you have any recent “milestones” to celebrate?

NGC at DAV - Action Plan

E-mail Print

The NGC Groups of DAV are now ready with Action Plan.  They met on 21st February 2009 and the following action plan has been evolved.

1.  Ethics Group

Ethics basically focuses on good life and the ability to distinguish between right and wrong, good and bad.  Its all about values and ideals for a satisfied life.  This aspect is reflected in everyday life right from day-to-day home issues to international leels.  Be it - jumping of a queue by a VIP to the moral policing by Shri Ram Sena or the shoe being hurled at Bush in Iraq - all highlight ethic degeneration.

 On this  context, we focus on overcoming ethic degradation in everyday life.  We decide to start by taking small steps - taking a right step thinking before we do something.  It can someghing like helping a handicappe / blind cross the road or even something as small as not throwing garbage on the road.  All this will have a social & environmental impact as well.

We decide to have debates & essay writing competitions on these lines.

2. Law Group

Law Group is a small initiative towards creating legal awareness at the community level.  this venture will be like a ripple effect, having a positive influence on the society, state, national and global level.

A few activities that the Law Group would like to undertake at the individual level are:

- Conduct discussions on legal issues

- Have debates on legal matters and topics of social interest

- Through skits and plays, we would like to spread awareness on different social issues

- We would like to create peer awareness on our right and duties so that we become responsible citizens

- Studying about the constitution and having quizes

3. Potential Realisation Group

Every one of us are gifted with some in born talent and only a few bring it out.

After a brief discussion among our group, we arrived at the following:

OBSTACLES:

1. Inferiority complex : the feeling that we are not good compared to others;

2. Stage fear

3. An inner feeling of what others would think of us

Every problem has a solution.

1.  Opportunities are plenty around us but we don'g gram many.  So, first is participating in all the activities we are good at;

2. At the individual level, we will voice out our views without any fear of others;

3. Inculcate a sense of self-esteem by organising and participating in activities like debate, essay writing;

4. Since all the groups are interlinked, we could arrange for literary activities based on environment or legal issues which would bring out talents and at the same time create awareness;

5. Overall personality development

4. Environment Group

Environment group is basically created to recognise the various ways by which we can protect and preserve the environment.  This group mainly concentrates on spreading awareness for the need of a clean environment and also spread awareness about the shortcomings of an unclean and polluted environment.  We aim to spread this awareness at an individual level initially and later spread it at a global level and pass this message in a comprehensive manner for all stratas of the society.

5. Productivity Group

We can try to increase productivity in various ways, being aware of all our different ways of doing thing and doing it in the most efficient way is the aim of this group.  We can try it with many things like in Anna University, the present program on quality management.  It aims mainly on doing things in a better way.

We can implement this, by holding quizzes and having some simple, short and enlighting lectures to the students.  We can show with statistical data on how we can improve daily duties.  This is a continuous process and the best way we can do it is with find ways of doing things either by ourselves or from others.

We could hold a debate session on matters which may seem small but when taken on a longer period of time and a larger scale, it may be productive in a big way.  Like way, we drive our cars like left turns are more efficient than right turns  (fuel efficient)

6. Systems Group

The system group will focus on finding a solution to the traffic problems outside the School.  For this purpose, this Group will take the help of all other groups in streamlining the system.  As a first step, the students will be made to walk on the Footpath, instead of walking on the roads, which in turn disturbs the traffic and at the same time not very safe for the students as well.
